Portland Dems Gather to Elect New Leadership and Reform Committee Structure

Local Democrats Gather at Reiche School to Improve Party Presence in Portland

Portland, Maine, September 5, 2009: After almost a year of virtual stagnation, the Portland Democratic City Committee emerged this week with a new organizational structure, new membership, and new executive leadership. A little less than a month after Democrats from around the Greater Portland area gathered in Riverton Community School to discuss the fate of the PDCC, members came together once again to elect Reb Brann, Burt Wartell, and William Nelligan as Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary of Portland’s only Democratic committee.

Prompted by incoming Chair Reb Brann, meeting attendees decided on a new approach to their leadership structure. Attendees discussed a plan that created a robust division of labor between the four top positions (Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary), as well as designated management positions falling under each. These included lead roles in candidate development, volunteer recruitment, fundraising, and event planning. As city and state elections wind closer, the PDCC is gearing up to lead Portland in the fight against TABOR II and marriage discrimination. The committee is also beginning to gather volunteers and financial resources to support a slate of candidates for School Committee and City Council.
